What is Structured Literacy Reading Intervention?
Structured Liteacy is a research-based approach to teaching reading that focuses on the essential components of literacy development in a systematic and cumulative manner. It is designed to support students who struggle with reading by explicitly teaching each of the foundational skills necessary for fluent reading and comprehension.
These components include:
1. Phonology
Understanding and working with sounds in spoken language.
2. Sound-Symbol Relationships
Recognizing how sounds (phonemes) correspond to letters and letter combinations (graphemes).
3. Syllables
Understanding the structure and division of words into syllables, which supports decoding and spelling.
4. Morphology
Recognizing and understanding the structure of words, including prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
5. Syntax
Understanding sentence structure and grammar to help with reading comprehension.
6. Semantics
Grasping the meaning of the words, phrases, and sentences in context.
The key features of Structured Literacy instruction are:
1. Systematic and Cumulative Instruction: Lessons are organized in a step-by-step sequence, starting with simpler concepts and gradually building to more complex ones. this ensures that foundational skills are mastered before more advanced ones are introduced.
2. Explicit Teaching: Each concept is taught directly and clearly, with teachers modeling and guiding students through the learning process. There is no assumption that students will figure these skills on their own.
3. Diagnostic and Responsive: Instruction is tailored to each student’s needs, with continuous assessment to identify strenghts and areas for growth. Teachers provide corrective feedback immediately, ensuring that misconceptions are addressed and that students stay on track.
4. Consistent Review: Lessons consistently revisit and reinforce previously taught concepts to ensure retention and mastery over time.
By integrating all these elements in a structured, intentional way, Structured Literacy provides a comprehensive, effective intervention for students who need additional support in developing reading skills. It builds strong foundational knowledge, helping students move from simple tasks like identifying individual sounds and words, to more complex tasks like understanding sentences and reading passages with fluency and comprehension.
When does a child need reading intervention? How will a reading interventionist help?
A child may require reading intervention if they have difficulty reading letters, and sounds. This may also include the child struggling with blending sounds, reversal of letters or frequent spelling errors, as well as they may display slower reading skills and have trouble with fluency.
A reading interventionist will design a program based on your child’s needs and teach them to gain confiedence with their reading and comprehension skills.
